Rebuilt at the end of the fourteenth century, the fortified castle of Saumur was completely new when the Limbourgs depicted it with perfect precision. It still exists, although it has lost the lyrical splendor of its towers, chimneys, weathervanes, pinnacles and battlements.

The Duke of Berry was born at Vincennes in December 1340. The final scene of this royal calendar thus symbolically shows the formidable dungeon as well as the nine towers surrounding the royal castle which is hidden by the trees, and which was enlarged, completed and aggrandized by Charles V.
