The Duke of Berry likewise had the Castle of Dourdan restored. Its eight uncrowned towers and its dungeon can be still seen today.

In the background, above the treetops of a forest, can be seen the roofs and towers of a fortified castle. There is much evidence to indicate that this is not the castle of Riom but the Parisian
palace of the Cité

The building that the Limbourgs have minutely represented is the palace of the Cité. On the left we recognize the towers of the Conciergerie and, on the right, the lofty silhouette of the Sainte Chapelle.

The castle of Poitiers which was completely restored by the Duke of Berry and destroyed during the Religious wars. Triangular in shape, it stands at the junction of the Boivre and the Clain, only two of its towers have survived.

Rebuilt at the end of the fourteenth century, the fortified castle of Saumur was completely new when the Limbourgs depicted it with perfect precision. It still exists, although it has lost the lyrical splendor of its towers, chimneys, weathervanes, pinnacles and battlements.

The Duke of Berry was born at Vincennes in December 1340. The final scene of this royal calendar thus symbolically shows the formidable dungeon as well as the nine towers surrounding the royal castle which is hidden by the trees, and which was enlarged, completed and aggrandized by Charles V.
